UNCLE GUS'

READING TERMINAL'S NEW STAR

The Philadelphia cheesesteak world is incredibly diverse, but at the same time there are many family and business ties weaving their way through that world, connecting one cheesesteak venue to another.

So it is with Uncle Gus' Steaks, a new arrival at the Reading Terminal Market. Uncle Gus' cheesesteaks are sensational, and that is not surprising given that Uncle Gus' is the brainchild of Danny DiGiampietro (the driving force behind both Angelo's Pizzeria and NYC's recently opened Danny & Coop's), along with fellow RTM residents Tommy DiNic's and Pearl's Oyster Bar.

Excellence begets excellence.

Uncle Gus (not to be confused with the one-time TV personality of the same name) was Gaetano "Gus" Pollizz, great-uncle to Joey Nicolosi of Tommy DiNic's. Old Gus was a beloved character at the Reading Terminal Market for decades, known for singing opera as he worked the register at DiNic's.

Uncle Gus' is right there as you enter the RTM through Door 4 on 12th Street (near Arch). There is usually a line, but it moves fast. The seeded rolls are "inside out" (the interior bread has been scooped away) and you can look through the glass divider and watch them grilling up the savory steak you will be enjoying three minutes later. If you like the steaks at Angelo's, you will like the ones at Uncle Gus' too - guaranteed.
