Dallas was named in honor of a Philadelphian – George Mifflin Dallas, pictured below (yes, on the right), who was the Mayor of Philadelphia, a US Senator from Pennsylvania, and, from 1845 to 1849, Vice President of the United States under President James Knox Polk.
Are Texans really smarter than Philadelphians? You be the judge.
As for those Stetson cowboy hats Texans are so fond of wearing, they were invented by John B. Stetson, whose Philadelphia-based Stetson Hat Company was once the largest hat company in the world.
So the next time some dopey galoot in a Cowboys jersey gives you that old "Don't mess with Texas" line (which was probably written by a Philadelphia ad agency), you should just respond, "Don't f*** with Philadelphia."
