BARRY'S
A TRADITION OF EXCELLENCE
If anyone in Philly knows about making great cheesesteaks, it's Barry McGuinn.
The likeable founder of Barry's Steaks, located in the city's Roxborough section, has been slinging steaks longer than most of us have been alive. He started in 1967 - nearly 60 years ago.
As cheesesteak hubs go, Roxborough is second only to South Philly. It is there you will find Dalessandro's and Chubby's. Barry worked at both before he and his wife Wendy opened their own place in 1989.
Like many Philly steakeries, Barry's Steaks remains family owned to this day. Barry's son Patrick now runs the show, but Barry - the grand old man of Philly cheesesteaks - is still there behind the counter.
And awesome cheesesteaks they are - juicy, grilled, and seasoned to perfection, slathered with your cheese of choice and monster onions, and served on a tasty Corropolese roll. This is a mighty fine sandwich, and nobody was surprised when Barry's won the 2016 Billy Penn annual competition as the Ultimate Philly Cheesesteak.
For the more adventurous, Barry's offers a half dozen specialty cheesesteaks found nowhere else, including the Ringer (featuring Barry's signature onion rings) and the Alpine (with Swiss and brown gravy).
And that is not all. Barry's is the only cheesesteak place we know that offers its own line of private label soft drinks - everything from black cherry and root beer to white birch beer, sarsaparilla, and raspberry lime rickey.
Barry's has built a proud tradition of excellence over 35+ years. If you happen to be near Roxborough and hungry for a first-rate cheesesteak, this is definitely a place to keep in mind.
