PHILBERT
THIS PIGGY WENT TO MARKET
This little piggy went to market - the Reading Terminal Market.
Philbert - whose "Philly" name derives from Filbert Street alongside the Reading Terminal Market - is a 225-pound bronze pig statue and the unofficial mascot of both the RTM and the Food Trust, which fights hunger in neighborhoods across the city.
RTM visitors find it convenient to "meet at the Pig" and rub Philbert's shiny nose for luck. The RTM is just steps from Chinatown, and Philbert is especially popular during the Chinese Year of the Pig (coming next in 2031).
Philbert was created in 1995 by the late Eric Berg, a renowned local sculptor whose many works appear throughout Pennsylvania and in nearby states and include the iconic statue of Massa the gorilla at the Philadelphia Zoo.
Fighting hunger is easy. Just place your bills and coins in Philbert's mouth and behold - they travel through his GI tract and drop out of his fat arse into a glass collection case.
What did you expect? This is Philly, after all.
