DYNASTY BUSTERS

WHO YOU GONNA CALL?

When it comes to defeating sports’ dynasty teams in the postseason, no city does it better than Philadelphia.

The Eagles’ last three NFL titles have come against three of the NFL’s all-time great dynasty teams – Patrick Mahomes and the Chiefs (2025), Tom Brady and the Patriots (2018), and Vince Lombardi and the Packers (1960). The Eagles wins ruined possible "three-peats" for all three teams. The Packers' 1960 postseason loss was the only one of Lombardi's career.

The Eagles have obviously never played the NFC’s Cowboys or 49ers in the Super Bowl, but they have beaten both of them in the NFC Championship Game (Cowboys 1981, 49ers 2023). And the Birds eliminated the defending Super Bowl Champion Giants with a 2009 playoff win at Giants Stadium.

Bill Russell and the Celtics had won 8 consecutive NBA championships – until the Sixers took them out in 1967.  As for basketball’s other legendary team, the Lakers, the Sixers swept them 4-0 in the 1983 NBA Finals. (The Lakers have been to 32 Finals and been swept only 3 times.)

In the last 50 seasons, no NL team has won more pennants than the Dodgers. But the Phillies have won their last 3 playoff series against the Dodgers (1983, 2008, 2009), all 3 series with the pennant on the line.

Remember 1974? That was when the Flyers beat Bobby Orr and the Boston Bruins in the Stanley Cup Finals.  In 1995, the Flyers took on the defending Stanley Cup champion Rangers and swept them 4-0.

Finally, the Villanova Wildcats won the 1985 NCAA men's basketball title with an incredible win over heavily favored Georgetown – and the 2016 title with an equally epic win over one of the NCAA’s all-time legendary basketball teams, North Carolina.
