EAGLES OFFENSE

WHAT THE REAL PROBLEM IS

No, the problem isn't the Eagles offense - it's the Eagles SECOND HALF offense.

We all know the O-line is banged up, and that Saquon and friends are not setting the NFL on fire as they did in 2024. But when it comes to first half points, the Birds are still #10 in the league - and #6 among the 16 teams still in playoff contention.

Not bad - especially considering that no NFL defense has given up fewer points over the last 10 games than the Eagles. If defense wins championships, Fangio's guys are putting the Birds in a position to succeed.

But now let's look at how the NFL's highest-paid offense has performed in the SECOND half of games.

It's abysmal.

Only 7 NFL teams (whose names you can probably guess) have scored fewer second half points than the Eagles. And when it comes to the 16 teams in playoff contention, the Birds are dead last. They average only 9.9 points in the second half.

Indeed, the Eagles have been shut out in the second half 3 times and held to one scoring drive 4 times. That's 7 of their 16 games. Those games include the collapses against Denver and Dallas, and the near-collapses against Tampa Bay, Detroit, and (most recently) Buffalo.

Had the Birds not blown those leads against Denver and Dallas, they would be 13-3 today and the NFC's top playoff seed.

If your midnight green blood isn't boiling already, keep reading.

Do you recall the game in which the Eagles scored the MOST second half points? That's right - the come-from-behind victory over the Rams, in which the Eagles trailed 26-7 in the 3rd quarter and roared back with 26 unanswered points for the win (20 by the offense, and 6 on Jordan Davis' game-ending blocked FG).

Interesting, isn't it? When the Eagles were in a deep hole and had no choice but to play aggressively, their offense was unstoppable.

Apart from the Rams game, the Eagles average only 8.8 points in the second half. That's the NFL's 3rd worst second half offense. Only the Raiders (7.6 points) and Browns (6.9 points) are worse.

Looks as if we may have pinpointed the problem. Either: (a) the Eagles just try to sit on leads by playing conservatively; or more likely (b) the other team makes halftime defensive adjustments that the Eagles fail to counter in the second half. The Eagles offense sputters, the other team possesses the ball longer, the Eagles defense gets gassed, the lead evaporates.

If the offense stalls out in the second half of a game, you could say everyone has a hand in it. But if that offense gets off to a decent start week after week and, just as consistently, falls off dramatically in the second half, it highlights a fundamental problem - there is never a Plan B for maintaining offensive momentum when defensive schemes shift.

And whose responsibility is it to come up that Plan B? Could it be... the offensive coordinator?

It sure would be a shame if the Eagles' season were to end on account of an anemic (but avoidable) second half performance by their otherwise talented offense.
