Recent decades have been very good to our beloved Phillies. How good? Going back to the golden year of 1980, only 3 MLB teams - the Yankees, Dodgers, and Cardinals - have won more pennants than the Phils. And only 5 teams have won more World Series.

Indeed, heading into 2025, the Phillies had a net winning record over 50 seasons from 1975 to 2024.

Ah, but Phillies history goes back to 1883 and most of it has been ugly. Very ugly.

Heading into 2025, the Phillies franchise had lost 11,326 regular season games in its history. As far as we are aware, that's more losses than any other team in any sport in the history of the world.

 

The Phils began this season 1,119 games below .500. That means that even if they were to average 100 wins a season for 29 straight seasons, they would still have an all-time losing record.

The good news is that if our planet were to be destroyed by an asteroid, there would be no more Phillies and no more Yankees. We'd be even.
