SPORTS' GREATEST MASCOT

No sports mascot captures the spirit, humor, and heart of a city like the Phillie Phanatic.

Since his debut in 1978, the Phanatic - the gold standard of all sports mascots - has been a beloved symbol of Philadelphia’s passion, grit, and endless fun. With his bright green fur, oversized beak, and mischievous personality, he quickly became the life of the ballpark and a source of joy for generations of Phillies fans. His unique blend of slapstick humor and genuine warmth has made every Phillies game an experience like no other.

Interestingly, the Phanatic was invented not by a Philadelphian but by two New York puppeteers and designers - Bonnie Erickson and her husband Wayde Harrison. Both had worked at one time with Muppets creator Jim Henson. They claimed the Phanatic's look was inspired in part by some large flightless bird from the Galapagos Islands. (What bird that might be, we have no idea.)

Although it may be hard for Phillies fans to believe, the Phanatic is not a living, breathing biological creature. There is actually a human being inside that costume. What is fascinating, however, is that over 5 decades, only two people have regularly performed the role of the Phanatic.

David Raymond originated the role, playing the Phanatic for its first 15 years and developing its unique personality. He then went on to become a mascot consultant and created Raymond Entertainment, a mascot company.

Tom Burgoyne became the Phanatic in the 1990s and has been at it ever since. Unlike Raymond, whose identity was largely kept a mystery, Burgoyne has become publicly identified with the role, served in the Phillies' front office, and done community relations work. He has even co-authored children's books featuring the Phanatic.

Nowadays, most teams have mascots. Many try to imitate the Phanatic - shaggy overweight buffoons in sports uniforms and giant sneakers - but none even come close. The Phanatic's combination of comedic genius, fan interaction, and enduring personality is unique and unmatched. His playful encounters with fans and opposing teams alike have turned ordinary games into unforgettable memories and built a bridge between the team and its passionate supporters, making everyone feel like part of the Phillies family.
