UNDERDOGS NO MORE
It was our fondest wish, nearly 60 years in the making. Even the youngest Eagles fans in 1960 (when the team won its last NFL title) were now grandparents and retirees. The city had waited decade after decade for this moment, and then, in 2018, the dream of four generations finally came true.
The Eagles delivered one of the most unforgettable and inspirational moments in all of sports history - a Super Bowl championship that united a city and captured the hearts of fans across the nation.
They were not supposed to win. They were not even supposed to survive without their MVP quarterback Carson Wentz, felled by a late-season knee injury. But this team, defined by heart, faith, and brotherhood, did not just defy the odds - they rewrote the story. Led by backup quarterback Nick Foles and fueled by an unshakable belief in each other, the Eagles soared to their first-ever Super Bowl victory, defeating the mighty New England Patriots in an instant classic.
Nick Foles became the face of resilience. He had begun his NFL career as a promising Eagles QB but became an undistinguished journeyman, bouncing around from team to team. After nearly walking away from football, he returned to Philly as a backup and stepped in after Wentz’s injury. Calm under pressure and humble in spirit, Foles led the Eagles through the playoffs with great poise, culminating in a truly legendary MVP performance in Super Bowl LII that included an unforgettable trick touchdown play which will forever be known as the “Philly Special.”
On defense, Brandon Graham delivered the game's critical moment late in the 4th quarter - a strip sack of Patriots' star QB Tom Brady that sealed the win and sent Philly into a frenzy. Rookie kicker Jake Elliott, cool beyond his years, nailed crucial field goals under the brightest lights.
And at the heart of it all was a bond deeper than football - a shared faith, a trust in God, and teammates' love for one another that transcended the scoreboard.
The team’s unity and belief were as powerful as their plays as they built a culture of purpose and humility. They prayed together, supported one another off the field, and credited God at every opportunity. With inspired guidance from coach (and former Birds' QB) Doug Pederson, the 2018 Eagles reminded the world what team-first football looks like.
Sadly, many key players would be gone within a year or two. But for one brief shining moment, everything was perfect.
And then came the parade.
On a cold but sunny February day, millions flooded Broad Street and the Ben Franklin Parkway to celebrate their champions. Eagles star center Jason Kelce, dressed in full Mummers attire, delivered a speech that would echo for generations.
With fire and raw emotion, Kelce shouted out every doubter and every overlooked teammate, declaring what every Philly fan had long felt - that this city, this team, and this moment belonged to them. It wasn’t polished, and it did not need to be. It was uncensored, genuinely passionate, and quintessentially Philadelphian. Kelce's bold words lit a fire in the hearts of everyone who had ever been told they weren’t good enough.
The 2018 Eagles gave Philadelphia more than a Lombardi Trophy - they gave it hope, joy, and an identity. They reminded a city of fighters that miracles do happen, that belief is powerful, and that true greatness comes from lifting each other up. In every chant, every tear, and every cheer from that season, the city found healing, pride, and unity.
They were underdogs - but in the end, the 2017-18 Eagles became champions.
